Description and Benefits:

Since the publication of Daniel Goleman’s book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More than IQ in 1996, the phrase “emotional intelligence” has become part of the global workplace vocabulary. Goleman’s studies of 200 global companies have established the business case for emotional intelligence. Technical and cognitive ability account for only 1/3 of the difference between average and top performers; mastery of 25 emotional competencies account for the other 2/3. In 2006, the Boston Globe ran a headline announcing emotional intelligence as a key criterion for hiring.

For MBTI professionals, the popularity of EQ has opened up new opportunities and questions:

  • Are some types more emotionally intelligent than others? If so, why?
  • What does MBTI have to offer the field of emotional intelligence? What are the synergies?
  • How can I leverage my expertise in MBTI to meet the growing market demand for emotional intelligence training?

What you will learn:

How to use the MBTI to support the development of each of the 4 components of Goleman’s emotional intelligence model
How Bar-On’s emotional intelligence competencies correlate to MBTI types
How to customize emotional intelligence developmental activities for various MBTI preferences
How type development can support emotional intelligence

Benefits:

Add to your professional toolkit of worksheets and activities
Strengthen your coaching or leadership development practice by integrating the language and insights from the field of emotional intelligence
Leverage the popularity of emotional intelligence to sell your services

Presenters:

Margaret Morgan Maat (INTP) and Beth Williams (ENFJ) are Managing Partners of Forward Focus, a change management company with niches in high-tech financial services firms and publishing. They use coaching, training and OD to improve individual, team and organizational performance in the midst of change. Early on, they recognized the potential of integrating MBTI and emotional intelligence and have a wealth of real-time experience to share.

Margaret came from the world of IT, managing a team of curriculum designers for a software application firm before going out on her own in 1989. She teaches a class in Emotionally Intelligent Leadership for NYU’s School of Continuing & Professional Studies. Beth comes from the sales and marketing side of the business, with experience in newspaper advertising sales and management. Together they are “Partners in the Business of Change” (and a case study of their own in using MBTI to fashion a partnership out of differences.) Margaret takes credit for showing Beth that even ENFJ’s have something to learn about emotional intelligence. And Beth would like recognition for insisting that Margaret develop what little emotional intelligence she has.
